The Pearl of Great Price

"You don't understand at all, Sahib. Don't you see? My only son gave his life to get this pearl, and I wouldn't sell it for any amount. Its worth is in the life-blood of my son. I cannot sell this—but I can give it to you. Just accept it in token of the love I bear you."

"Rambhau," said David with a choked voice, "don't you see? My words are just what you have been saying to God all the time."

"God is offering you heaven as a free gift. It is so great and so priceless that no man on earth could buy it. Millions of dollars are too little. No man could ever earn it. His life would be millions of years too short. No man is good enough to deserve it. It cost God the life-blood of his only Son to make the entrance for you into heaven. In a million years, in a hundred pilgrimages, you could not earn that entrance. All you can do is accept it as a token of God's love for you—a sinner."

"Rambhau, of course I will accept the pearl in deep humility, praying God I may be worthy of your love. And Rambhau, won't you accept God's great gift of heaven, too, in deep humility, knowing it cost him the death of his Son to offer it to you?"

Tears welled up in Rambhau's eyes as he said, "Sahib, I see it now. I have believed that Jesus was God's Son and came to earth from heaven to die for my sins but I just couldn't believe that his gift of heaven was free. But now I see. Some things are too priceless to be bought or earned. Sahib, I will accept God's gift of heaven and salvation!"1

My only son gave his life to
get this pearl, and I wouldn't
sell it for any amount.

Every year at Christmas and Easter we are reminded how God sent his Son, Jesus, to come to earth as a man to identify with us and to pay the judgment price for our sins—death. Jesus did this because of his great love for us. In so doing he provided us an escape from eternal separation from God and love—an unthinkable fate—to give us the gift of forgiveness for every sin we have ever or will ever commit. He also came and died to give us the gift of eternal life in heaven to be with God and our loved ones who have accepted God's pardon and gift of eternal life.

If you haven't accepted God's gift, you can do this right now wherever you are by simply praying and admitting to God that you are a sinner and by asking him for his forgiveness and inviting Jesus to come into your heart and life as personal Lord and Savior. Tell God that you accept his free pardon and the gift of heaven and thank him for all of this. In so doing you will find the Pearl of Greatest Price.
