No Need To Fear

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.1

A few years ago, we took our children to Disneyland. Our youngest child was 3 years old and fearless when it came to riding the roller coasters. She was up for any challenge she was tall enough for, making the visit much more enjoyable for her older siblings. A few years later, we returned to the “Happy Place” only to find that that same child, now 8 years old, had grown to fear every one of the rides she had previously enjoyed. She had forgotten the thrill and excitement she had felt before as they had now been replaced by anxiety and fear. Each time she was encouraged to try it again, she was terrified and turned to us, her parents, in tears. Needless to say, this visit caused her siblings to become frustrated with her for now they were unable to fully enjoy the attractions with everyone.

We experience fear over all sorts of things, and at all different stages in life a new roller coaster awaits us. Whether it be stepping out into the big world for the first time or the death of a loved one, we have all felt fear many times. During those times when we’ve faced those big, scary moments, we might have needed to turn to someone for comfort or encouragement. It can be a confusing time and we may have even asked, “where is God right now?” But, understanding that God is always there is what will bring peace to our hearts. Sometimes, however, He allows us to face the fearful moments so that we can grow; sometimes it’s because He sees the bigger picture and knows that this difficult experience is preparing us for the future. Whatever it might be, God already has a purpose for it. We can have peace in the assurance that what we fear today is in some way working for our good!

This year as we prepared for our Disney visit, my daughter approached me and said, “Mom, there are a few rides I’m still not ready to try, but I will try everything else as long as you ride with me.” She knew that I wouldn’t make her try anything that would frighten her and that peace allowed her (and her siblings) to have a memorable time. In the same way, God will “ride” beside you through every fearful circumstance and you need not fear the unknown because He already knows the end.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, life can be scary and it brings me so much peace to know that I can rely on you to walk me by the hand every step of the way. When doubt floods my mind and discouragement is all I feel, you are there to strengthen me and remind me that I have nothing to fear. Thank you, Father. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
