God's Miraculous Protection

"She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. ‘This is one of the Hebrew babies,’ she said. Then his sister asked Pharoah’s daughter, ‘Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?’ ‘Yes, go,’ she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. Pharoah’s daughter said to her, ‘Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.’ So the woman took the baby and nursed him."1

Before you begin today's devotional, pause to meditate on God's mercies that are new every day, for He loves and cares for you. Prepare your heart for God to speak to you.

Today’s story is about the baby Moses who is miraculously saved from a severe Egyptian decree that condemns all newborn Hebrew males to death. Thanks to God's providence and a mother full of faith, Moses ends up being adopted by Pharaoh's daughter. The situation in today's passage is almost chaotic, but, like all Old Testament narratives, this is a story that can minister to our lives.

Although God is not mentioned in today's verses, he is still the protagonist of this episode, as his presence drives the unfolding of events, revealing his purposes and reminding us of his unstoppable plan of redemption for mankind. In Genesis, God promised Abraham a great nation with a land of its own, a nation that would later welcome the incarnate Christ. The birth of Moses and his divine preservation signal another turn toward the fulfillment of that plan. We see God shaping history in order to prepare humanity for Jesus' glorious rescue mission. All of this is important context, as content like this helps us understand the background of the gospel message. Today's story reminds us that God has always kept in mind his plan of salvation for all of us.

God's miracle of preserving Moses' life is comforting and revealing. We discover a sovereign God over history, whose purposes cannot be thwarted despite the desperate attempts of oppressive powers. While Pharaoh wanted evil for the people of Israel, God wanted their good. And when it comes to a struggle between God's designs and man's designs, there is only one victor, that is, God's will reigns over all things.

Let us not forget that God's plan is the supreme plan. As with Moses, he only wants good for us. No wonder Jesus taught us to pray, "Thy will be done," in Matthew 6. This is the best way to pray! This passage is a reminder that the safest place in all the world is to be within God's will, even when times are tough. God does not promise us an easy life, but He does promise us that He will be with us at all times.

Like Moses, God can also rescue you from hostile situations. In fact, because of Jesus, we have been rescued from our own sin and delivered from separation from God. Take a moment today to surrender to God's will, taking up the wonderful words of John Newton: "’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home."

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for Your omnipotence and sovereignty over all things. Give me courage to surrender totally to your will. I recognize that your plan is the best. I desire to fulfill your purpose in my life and live according to your precepts. In Jesus' name, Amen.
