The Desires of Our Heart

"Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this..."1

We love the promise in verse 4 of today's passage: God will "give you the desires of your heart." Unfortunately, when we focus only on receiving gifts, we overlook the context of the Psalm, namely, that our cooperation is needed.

The first requirement for receiving the requests of our heart is that we delight in God. His top priority is our relationship with Him. We should delight in fellowship with Him and serve the Lord, and in time we will begin to think like Him.

The second requirement of this promise is that we commit ourselves to His plan (verse 5). Entrusting our way to God restructures the desires of our hearts until they resemble His. Now, sometimes what God gives us looks different than what we ask for. But He always responds to our pleas according to His infinite knowledge and His great love. He grants the best answer to our prayer, whether we ask Him or not.

Remember that God wants to grant our requests, but what He longs for most is to relate to us. Seeing our heart's desires fulfilled is just a byproduct of delighting in Him. The true reward is a relationship with the God who offers to spend time with humanity.

Suggested Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, today I want to thank you for the promise you give us in your Word, but you also ask us to delight in you first before granting us the desires of our hearts. Thank you, Lord, that your Word is clear and concise. Let us see it clearly according to your will. I pray in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.
