Living in the Moment

“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life – whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear… can all your worries add a single moment to your life?”1

Adults tend to worry a lot. We worry about the unknown future, we worry about our kids, we worry about our jobs, our finances, our loved ones, our health… the list goes on and on. But the truth of the matter is, worrying about these things will seldomly change the outcome. All we can do is do our best with what God has given us, live like imitators of Christ, leave the unknown in God’s hands, and live in the moment. I know that not worrying is easier said than done. This is something that I struggle with and must be very intentional about. I am also a multi-tasker and find it difficult to settle my mind and focus on just one thing sometimes, but this is something God is working on in me.

I was reminded of this once again as my kids were playing outside the other day. They had been running around and playing non-stop, but there came a time where I noticed them simply gazing up at the sky. Later I found out that they had been admiring all the different clouds in the sky, and how they move. They had even noticed a rainbow cloud, which we don't get to see very often. They had been taking in the greatness of God’s creation! While these acts of stillness many times go unseen, I noticed and heard God speaking to me… “Be like a child.”

My young children trust that all their basic needs will be met, so none of those things are reason for worrying. They can enjoy the special times in life and live in the moment. This is how God wants us to trust him. With the innocence of a child. If God provides and cares for all the creatures and wildflowers, then he will certainly do the same for us. And if God can hold the entire universe in place, imagine what he can do with our problems and worries when we leave them in his hand. As today’s verse reminds us, our days are counted and worrying won’t add more time. But if we are not careful, we will let the days go by missing the blessings God has given us because we spent our time worrying about what we could not control.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for the constant reminder of your faithfulness. Allow me to be still and learn to live in the moment. Life is such a gift, that many times, we take for granted. Help me find joy in the midst of the problems and trust that you care for me and will provide what I need when I seek you first. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
