The Goodness of the Lord
“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”1
It is impossible to turn on the news, or read the newspaper, or tune in to social media today without hearing or reading about the most recent shooting, the new disease that plagues the world, the war breaking out overseas, the abduction of children, the murder of unborn babies; the list goes on and on. With all the wickedness that surrounds us, it is difficult to see any signs of goodness in this world.
But rest assured, goodness is there. I know this because God is Good, and he is with me every day. Despite the evil I see daily, God reminds me of His Goodness when I wake up every morning with breath in my lungs and I look out my window and see the beauty of His creation. I am reminded of His Goodness when I see my children and hear their laughter. And even though there is ugliness around me, I can reflect God’s Goodness in me to others as I pass them on the road or in the market, simply by granting them a smile, showing respect, and being polite.
While chatting with my teenage son this morning, I asked him, “Where do you see God’s Goodness?” To which he replied, “Well…God is good enough to allow me to see the difference between good and evil and then lets me choose which to follow. I’d say that’s a pretty good God!” Of course, he followed that up with, “Don’t worry Mom, I choose to do good!” God is Good, and He does allow us the free will to choose. We can choose to do good or evil. We can choose to have a good day or a bad one. God’s goodness is all around us, and if we take a moment to enjoy the Lord’s blessings instead of concentrating on the fear that our surrounding circumstances instill, we will see it! I pray you have a GOOD day, today!
Suggested Prayer: Dear God, your goodness abounds even in the midst of all the evil that surrounds us. You have not left us, and your mercy is still great. Allow me to show your goodness to others through my words and my actions; that it may spark a light of good in these dark times. God, you are Good - I am so thankful. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
