We Are the People of God
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.1
Whenever feelings of low self-worth threaten us with discouragement, we need to trust the truth of the Word instead of our emotions. Today we will examine four phrases that describe how the Lord views each believer as a member of:
1. A chosen people. God chose each of us to be part of his kingdom and his family because he loves us and longs for us.
2. A royal priesthood. As believers, we are children of God and part of a royal family. Christ fulfilled the roles of king and priest. Likewise, God has also entrusted us with priestly responsibilities of adoration and intercession for others.
3. A holy nation. The church, or body of Christ, is a collection of holy people, which means "set apart" for His purposes.
4. His special possession. We belong to God, for he sent his Son to die on the cross in our place so that we could be his.
Each of these descriptions demonstrates the great value God places on you. Begin today to show the truth of His Word by remembering your true identity and living the calling He has for you.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me of my true identity. Forgive me, because sometimes I have allowed myself to be governed by how society expects me to be. But You remind me through Your Word that I am chosen, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and Your possession. But in simpler words and more understandable to my heart, I am a child of God, cared for and loved. Thank you for such a beautiful reminder. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
1. 1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIV).
