No More Excuses
For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.1
It is a part of human nature to make excuses. However, the “but” in our lives has the power to keep us from being our best selves or from receiving the greatest blessings. Jesus once told the parable2 of a man who gave a great banquet and invited many. When it was time for the feast to begin, all of his invitees began to make excuses for why they could not attend. The first one said, I would, but…. “I bought a field, and I must go out and see it.” The next one said, I would, but…. “I have bought oxen, and I need to go examine them.” And another said, I would, but…. “I just got married, so I cannot come.” When the host heard of all the excuses he became angry and told his servant to go out to the city streets and bring in the poor, crippled, blind, and lame. The excuses he had been given were not in themselves bad reasons for why they could not attend, it was the fact that they were being given a blessing and choosing to reject it. He had prepared a banquet meant to be enjoyed and the “buts” of the guests caused them to be uninvited.
A similar invitation has been extended to each of us. God has invited us to accept the gift of His Son, Jesus, and the promise of an eternal banquet waiting for us to enjoy in Heaven one day. Yet, many of us have an excuse as to why we will not accept this invitation: “I will think about that when I am older”, “No one else in my family is a Christian”, or “My life is fine the way it is”. These and many other excuses have been given to the King of kings in rejection of His eternal gift of Salvation. Now what if God decided to take back His invitation? Are we prepared to lose an eternity with Him? Our God is merciful and patient and desires that no one be left out — not wanting anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9). There is already a place prepared for you, will you accept His invitation?
Dear Heavenly Father, I have made too many excuses but I am no longer willing to spend an eternity without you. I ask you to forgive my sins and I accept your gift of Salvation that you have so freely offered. Thank you for a place at your table. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
