God is in Control

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.1

The headlines today have been shaking the world, as I imagine they have for centuries whenever a new world event occurs. Extreme weather and government shutdowns shake our world. Rumors of wars, pandemics, and hate crimes increase, and our world is shaken. And while most of this is out of our control, it is not out of God’s! If before reading the latest headlines we were to open the Bible, we would see that time and time again God has proven Himself faithful. In fact, Scripture always seemed to be written to people living in unstable times. Whether they were living under a hostile ruler or being violently persecuted, God was there. He has walked next to His children during the darkest of circumstances and seen them through. He has made a way where there seemed to be no way. He has comforted the hurting, healed brokenness, and given new life. What makes us think that He will not come through for us today?

Jesus said that He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Heb. 13:8)

If we can learn to rely on God for our next breath, then we can rely on Him for anything that the day, the week, or the future might bring. Learning to live each moment as it is given to us will bring us peace, but if we choose to live in fear of what may come, we will live unsettled and unfulfilled. Nothing happening in the world today is unnoticed by God, nothing is out of His control. “Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has commanded it? Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that good and bad come?” (Lam. 3:37-38 ESV) Take refuge in the presence of the Almighty. Pray with confidence and be filled with hope.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, All fear is gone.

Because I know He holds the future, life is worth the living just because He lives.2

Suggested prayer: Thank you, Heavenly Father, for your faithfulness. Help me to trust that you are in control of everything that I may fear and rely on the promise that nothing is unseen by you. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen
