Knowing God

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.1

What do Abraham, Moses, Jesus’ disciples, and all believers have in common? All had (and have) a close relationship with God! Abraham was directly referred to as “God’s friend” (Ja. 2:23). Moses spoke face to face with the Lord “as a man speaks to his friend” (Ex. 33:11). Jesus called his disciples “friends” in John 15 and as believers, as we come to know God more intimately we, too, become His friends! We made the decision to follow Jesus because we desired to have a personal relationship with God. We desired to know Him, not just of Him, and to be known by Him as well. Knowing someone requires spending time with them and taking interest in their likes and dislikes… what makes them happy and what makes them sad. Once we get to know that person, we find that it brings us joy to see them smile. Getting to know God is no different! While reading the Bible we learn that following Him brings Him joy and we understand that our sin saddens Him and breaks His heart. As we get to know Him more closely our desire to see Him smile brings us to spend more time in His presence and thus begins a beautiful friendship with the Almighty God of the universe! Seek to know God — not just of Him — It will be the greatest relationship you will ever have!

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Knowing you brings me peace and being in your presence fills me with an unspeakable joy. Help me to remain in your Word. Thank you for being my friend. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
