More than Words

“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”¹

My oldest daughter has always been an observer. She carefully takes in information from her surroundings and quietly processes it. I can almost see the wheels in her head turning! This quality of hers has opened the doors to deep and meaningful questions, which have given me the opportunity as a parent to have faith conversations with her.

Recently, we had a conversation about our words and actions as Christians. This came after she heard a “Christian” using inappropriate language. Their words were not what you would expect from a child of God. I love this quality in my daughter because God has used it several times to make me more aware of my words and actions, knowing that she is watching everything I do. I strive to be a good example of Christ for her to follow and pray that, as she grows, she will continue to be a good example for those around her as well.

After this conversation, I was reminded once again of the importance of being “as Christ” to others. People are watching and listening. What are we communicating with our words and actions? At times it is easy to get frustrated or caught in the moment, and we may be inclined to respond to stressful situations just as anyone else would. However, we are not just anyone. We are children of the Almighty King. We were bought with a price. We are God’s chosen people. This should always be in our mind, especially as we interact with others daily. At every moment we can point others to Christ. Such a great privilege and such a great responsibility. Let us ask God to guard our words and guide our actions, so that we can respond to every situation as He would.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, what a great privilege to be your hands and feet in our world today. We are living stressful times and people are often quick to judge others and respond in ways that tear down instead of edifying others. Please help my words be always filled with grace, seasoned with salt, so that others would hear you through me. I want to reflect you in all that I say and do. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
