Make the Best of Today
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.1
My daughter has made it her job to change the day on our calendar blocks every morning. Each day she likes to announce how quickly the day before had gone by. When she switched the month block to February, she exclaimed, “Wasn’t it just Christmas?” I always feel like time is just flying by; that every year seems to go by quicker than the one before. But, to hear my ten-year-old express it sent a whole new reel of emotions through me! Have I taken full advantage of the time? Have I created enough “moments” for my children to remember? Have I taught them enough about Jesus so that they can have their own relationship with Him? The latter is the question that really matters!
God has entrusted each of us to be His examples here on Earth; first and foremost in our homes and to those we may have under our charge. Teaching by His example is the best way to make the most of our time because our lives will constantly reflect God’s love and patience. When our attitude becomes one of busyness and indifference, those are the “moments” that are being remembered. If the words that come out of our mouths are criticism and insincerity, then that is what I’m teaching. Ephesians 5 is left for us as one of the many guidelines in Scripture that teach us how to live in Christ. Once we learn it, we can live it and teach it.
Two-thousand years ago, the apostle Paul proclaimed the days to be evil; today they are so much more. Time does go by quickly so we have to make the best use of the time given us today!
Dear God, I waste so much time worrying about tomorrow that I overlook what can be done today. Help me to seek Your will first. Give me the grace to be an example of Your Love and Mercy. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
