The Workplace

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges, he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.1

The way people view the gospel is greatly influenced by how Christians act outside the church. The way we live must permeate all areas of life, including the workplace.

Our behavior reflects our faith. So if we claim to be Christians, then our coworkers, boss, and employees will compare our attitudes and actions to Christ. Do those around you see a positive reflection of God?

Let's look at a biblical model. First, as we read in today's passage, we must see ourselves as servants and put the needs of others before our own. Next, we must recognize that our true boss is Christ, therefore, we work with integrity and effort, knowing that our reward comes from Him (Colossians 3:23). Therefore, since all authority on earth is God-given (Romans 13:1), we are to obey our superiors willingly, unless they ask us to do something that goes against God's Word. And finally, we must see that all those with whom we work and for whom we work have value in the eyes of the Creator and should be treated with respect (1 John 4:7-8).

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that in today's passage you remind me that I need to have an attitude like Jesus. Lord, help me to be a reflection of you at work, at home, and wherever I go. May everything I do be done for you, knowing that You are present at all times of my day. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
