Keep on Planting!
“I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow. It’s not important who does the planting, or who does the watering. What’s important is that God makes the seed grow. The one who plants and the one who waters work together with the same purpose. And both will be rewarded for their own hard work.”1
Last week I was contacted by a woman who I hadn’t seen or heard from in more than 20 years. She used to attend the church my parents were missionaries at down in Mexico, but her family did not attend church and she struggled to stay strong in her faith. When her family moved away, I never knew what had become of her until the other day. She found me on Facebook and sent me a private message saying, “I don’t know if you remember me, but I remember you and your family. I am so glad to have found you again! I am attending the church where your dad used to pastor and my entire family is now serving the Lord. My son plays guitar during worship and we are actively part of the life of the church. I thank God for using your family to plant the seed in my heart.”
At times we may feel like our work and effort is not producing fruit, but as today’s scripture reminds us, it is God who makes things grow. Our job is to faithfully plant seeds, and water where needed, and to remember that our work in the Lord is not in vain. People are watching you and listening. At times we can plant seeds in the most unexpected of circumstances, which is why it is so important to be in tune with the Holy Spirit and live in obedience to God’s Word. Whether you see people’s lives changed tomorrow or 20 years from now, continue planting seeds and trusting God for the growth.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, I want to be used by you. Whether it be in planting seeds in the hearts of others or watering the seeds, I ask that you help me faithfully do the work you have set before me. Thank you that my work is never in vain when done for you and your glory. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
