Bad Company

“Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’”¹

The apostle Paul was an amazing example of what it looks like to stand for truth, despite the opposition. In today’s passage, his passion for the gospel is evident as he once again reminds the Corinthian people of the gospel truth. He warns them to “not be deceived” by people who may want to convince them otherwise.

Today, we need to adhere to the same warning, as we are constantly surrounded by a multitude of differing opinions and self-proclaimed truths. Even within our friendship circles, we can face the temptation to falter in our faith and be deceived. There is no denying that friendships are an important part of life. We are relational beings and God doesn’t want us to be alone. However, we should also seek wisdom from God in choosing our friends and ask Him to put the right people in our paths. Does this mean that we should only seek to befriend like-minded people? Not necessarily. Having differing opinions with others allows for growth and opportunities to practice speaking the truth in love. The way we respond to difficult situations can be a great testimony to others of our faith. The problem arises when, instead of being an example to others of Christ, they influence us to go against what we know is true.

William Gladstone said, “Choose wisely your companions, for a young man’s companions, more than his food or clothes, his home or his parents, make him what he is.” While many of us may have received godly advice and education in our homes growing up, we have also seen how that foundation can be corrupted by the influences we allow in our lives.

Let us choose to be a friend that will motivate others to follow truth, love Jesus, and glorify Him with their decisions. Then let us ask God to provide friends that will help us do the same.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gift of friendships. I pray that you would help me stand for Your truth and encourage others to do the same. Help me be a friend that will help others draw closer to you and motivate them to fulfill the purpose you have for them. Guide me, also, to friends who will do the same for me. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
