Be Fearless
“But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram and sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the royal princes, who were about to be murdered. She put him and his nurse in a bedroom to hide him from Athaliah; so he was not killed. He remained hidden with his nurse at the temple of the Lord for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.”1
There are so many amazing women in the Bible that we hear of often. However, today we are going to take a look at a woman who is not so commonly spoken of (but she should be!) … Jehosheba. Perhaps one of the reasons she is not so popular is that the story surrounding her bravery, and her background in general, is a little confusing. Long story short, she was the daughter of Jehoram, king of Israel, and half sister to Ahaziah. Ahaziah’s mother was Athaliah, who was the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, the evil king and queen. When Athaliah’s son, Ahaziah, is killed, she set out to murder the entire line of David! She killed her own grandsons!! However, without Athaliah knowing, God used Jehosheba to hide one single descendant of David named Joash.
God could have raised an entire army to rescue the line of David. Instead, he used one fearless woman named Jehosheba. For six years, she hid Joash, which I am sure was no easy task. And where did she hide him? A place where the Baal worshipping, evil queen wouldn’t go – the House of the Lord.
God promised David that his throne would last forever and that was fulfilled with the birth of the Messiah. God is faithful and always keeps his word. And just how he had a plan for Jehosheba, he has a plan for you and me as well. What is God asking us to do today? Are we willing to stand up for what is right and be fearless? God doesn’t necessarily need an army; he can use just one to get the job done. Will you trust Him and let Him use you today?
Suggested prayer: Dear God, the evil in this world is still great. The enemy is trying to use whatever way possible to stop your work and keep others from knowing you. Please show me what you want me to do. Help me be fearless and trust you with my life. I choose to be that ONE who is available and willing to be used by you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
2 Kings 11:2-3 (NIV).
