Elijah’s Legacy
“Then the woman said to Elijah, ‘Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.’”1
During the time of the kings of the Old Testament, not all of the kings of Israel feared the Lord as was originally intended. God had provided his people with prophets to keep them aware of God's commandments and to relay messages from the Lord to the people. The seventh king of Israel, Ahab, was especially wicked, the worst king of Israel according to the Bible! God’s prophet during Ahab’s reign was Elijah and boy did he have his work cut out for him!
Elijah had earned the love and respect of the people from his travels as he boldly proclaimed God's message and performed miracles in the Lord’s name (1 Kings 17). King Ahab knew of Elijah and probably hoped to never have to meet him. However, a few years later God sent Elijah directly to the wicked king. Because previous kings had drawn the people away from the Lord and into idol worship, Elijah had to work to bring them back. He was bold and creative in finding ways to make the Israelites realize they were being led astray, causing Ahab’s anger to rise against Elijah. Ahab called him “his enemy” (1 Kings 21:20), and his equally wicked wife, Jezebel, sought to kill Elijah and all of God’s prophets on more than one occasion. When Elijah would hide from the king and his murderous queen, the Lord would send him right back with a new message!
Elijah was a man who followed and obeyed God; he listened and heard God’s voice. Throughout his story we see Elijah speaking to God, withholding any step until God approved. God took care of Elijah and provided for him, giving him the courage to be bold and the strength to be brave, even when his unwelcome message put his very life in danger.
God allowed Elijah to leave earth without death but not before leaving a successor to continue on Elijah’s legacy (2 Kings 2:9-15); a prophet who not only wanted to be like Elijah but wanted a double portion of the man Elijah was. The world needs Elijah’s brave and bold spirit still today; someone who will stand up against the sinfulness that plagues us at every turn. Will you carry on Elijah’s legacy today?

Dear Lord, as I listen to the news and read about the controversial topics that I know sadden your heart, I desire to be brave, like Elijah, and carry your message to those who have been blinded by sin. Help us, as your children, to stand boldly in your name, even though your message remains unwelcome to many. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
