Seasonal Fruit

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law, he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”1

As the seasons change from summer to fall, the colors and smells fill my senses so that I can’t help but smile! I get particularly excited to see the pumpkins sprouting up in the fields; large, ripe, and ready for harvest! The crispness in the air reminds us that a new season is among us, and our palettes become ready for the flavors of fall.

Our life comes with seasons too. There are seasons in our lives where our days are filled with bright colors and warmth; followed by a season that leaves us feeling cold and with a bitter taste in our mouths. We are not naive in knowing that we will have our share of good times and hard times; but when our thoughts are centered on the Lord, and we spend our days delighting in His Word, He allows us to come through each moment producing the fruit that is appropriate for every season of our life. Sometimes that fruit will be big and beautiful and sometimes it will be odd-shaped and bruised. One of the things I love about going to a pumpkin patch is the variety of pumpkins you will find. Some are perfectly shaped and bright orange, while others are discolored and full of warts. However, there is beauty in each one, and I love that the gardener doesn’t take the “ugly” ones out, but rather leaves them for all to enjoy. All the different sizes and shapes and colors give character to the pumpkin patch and provide it a unique beauty.

Psalm 1 is a beautiful reminder that God created us to change with the seasons and bear much fruit. What our life produces doesn’t have to be perfect. When God is the gardener, we can be sure that it is a fruit perfect for sharing with others. Allow others to enjoy this season with you, no matter what season it may be. Just as the sun and the rain bring fruit to each season, so will your life. The ‘good’ fruit and the ‘ugly’ fruit are all meant to give us character and provide a unique beauty in each one of us. Enjoy the seasonal fruit that God is producing in your life today!

Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, how good you are to allow me to greet each season of my life with a different perspective. Today I want to delight in you and see the fruit you have created me to produce. Then, allow me to share it with others, so that they might see you in every season of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Psalm 1:1-3 (ESV).
