Who Will You Follow?

“But Elisha replied, ‘As surely as the Lord lives and you yourself live, I will never leave you!’”1

Elijah was God’s faithful prophet to the people. He lived obedient to God’s Word and served where he was sent. However, there was a time in Elijah’s life where he felt that he was the only faithful prophet remaining! It seemed that everyone around him was worshipping idols, and I can imagine it felt exhausting at times not having anyone like-minded walking alongside him. This is when God gave Elijah the instruction to choose Elisha as his successor. Elisha was called in 1 Kings 19:19 and spent the next several years learning from Elijah and following him wherever he went.

Elisha seemed to love Elijah like a father. Despite Elijah telling Elisha to stay behind before he was taken into heaven, Elisha refused to leave him. Perhaps, he wanted to hear one more word of wisdom, see one more miracle, and spend every last bit of time with his mentor and friend. Elisha witnessed when Elijah was taken into heaven, and at that moment Elijah’s responsibilities fell on him. As God had said, Elisha would now be His prophet to the people and God would be with Elisha just as he had been with Elijah.

Henry Blackaby said, “Watch to see where God is working and join Him in His work”.

Where do you see God working around you? And WHO is he using to do that work? The people we choose to follow should reflect God’s character and help us grow in Christ. In the same way you should stay away from influences who will steer you off the right path. Ask for God’s guidance in choosing friends and mentors.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, give me wisdom to follow those whom you are working in and though, and who will lead me closer to you. Help me, also, be a friend and encourager to others who are trying to serve you, and that, together, we can follow you. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’s name, amen.
