Courageous Trust

“The Lord is my light and my salvation – so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble? Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.”¹

Fear is something that all of us have encountered at one time or another, and David was no different. As a young shepherd, David was chosen by God to be the king of Israel. King Saul became jealous of David and sought to kill him, so David found himself running for his life! After he became king, David was consumed by the sin of lust, and took Bathsheba as his wife after having her husband Uriah killed. Despite all the heartache and battles David faced, his heart for God remained. Psalm 27 was a reminder to him, and all of us, that our confidence is in the Lord.

Trusting God, especially in times of fear, takes courage. Our feelings can seem overwhelming, and our mind starts to wander when our focus drifts from our Protector. The battles we face may be different than David’s, but everyday we are fighting temptations and striving not to be consumed by this world. Doing the right thing will always come with oppression, but we can be sure that when our confidence is in the Lord, our enemies will be defeated!

Hebrews 4:16 reminds us to “Come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Perhaps this is why David was a man after God’s own heart, because even when he was afraid or when he failed, he never stopped coming back confidently to our gracious God.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, when fear wants to consume me, please let me come to you in confidence, like David, knowing that you will give me the victory. Help me have courageous trust in you and remain steadfast. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
