God’s Tugboats
Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”1
Tugboats are an indispensable part of the shipping industry, facilitating the safe passage of large ships through narrow channels and shallow waters. They are designed to maneuver larger vessels by pulling or pushing them. What makes these little boats so important is that, because large ships are unable to turn sharply at low speeds, tugboats are used to push and pull ships into position upon arrival at ports. Some tugboats have been designed for search and rescue missions, and yet others are specially adapted to act as ice breakers. These small vessels are exceptionally powerful and heavily relied on. I got to see one in action recently; upon first glance, It appeared that the large cargo ship was merely pulling the little tugboat along. As they came into the bay, all eyes were on the massive ship loaded high with its heavy cargo. The small tugboat looked insignificant in comparison. It took me a bit to realize that it was the smaller boat that was indeed pushing the oversized vessel. It was incredible to watch how such an enormous load could be completely reliant on something many times smaller than itself.
How often do we overlook the seemingly insignificant things, the tugboats, in our lives, only to realize that without them we wouldn’t be where we are today? We are given numerous tugboats in life to keep us on course. The most important one is God’s Word. This small, insignificant-looking book on the outside, is filled with powerful, life-changing Words. Words that are designed to navigate our lives toward the port which is Christ and pull us away from the sin that might otherwise cause great destruction. God gave us His Word and left us The Holy Spirit to be that still small voice to either push, pull or stop us as we navigate this world. God’s Word and the Holy Spirit are the “tugboats” that will take us to a safe harbor without incident, navigate us through life’s tight spaces, and even break through the icy obstacles in our path. Our “tugboats” may push or pull us a little, and sometimes, may even put on the brakes completely, but they are necessary and invaluable. Allow God’s “tugboats” to be your life’s support today. Let them guide you with their exceptional power and rest in the fact that you can rely on their strength to come to your rescue.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Lord, You are faithful, Your Word is powerful and true; I have only to trust You and Your promise to guide me in the calm waters as well as through life’s roughest storms. Thank you because I can rely on you no matter my situation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
