Imitate Our Lord Jesus Christ
"Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly beloved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”1
As believers, we are to imitate the Lord Jesus Christ. That might seem impossible to us; After all, He is the Son of God! In fact, God the Father affirmed several times, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). How can we live up to that?
God doesn't expect us to be perfect. He knows we're still learning. Like a father who rejoices in his baby's first steps, our Heavenly Father delights in our steps as we try to walk with Him. The goal is growth. Once a child walks, the parents' delight shifts to more mature achievements. As we continue to grow in faith, we will never stop learning new ways to please our Heavenly Father.
What is important to the Lord is our heart. In the midst of all our weaknesses, failures, and temptations, God sees our most intimate thoughts. He knows how much we love Him and how much we want to obey Him. Even when we stumble, He helps us up and encourages us with His Word.
If you have a propensity for perfectionism, give yourself grace and time to grow. That's what the Father does, so learn to see yourself through His eyes. He is waiting, not to rebuke your efforts, but to help you become the person He had in mind when He created you.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you Lord that you don't expect me to be perfect. You know I'm learning, and you rejoice in my steps as I strive each day and try to walk with you and please you. Lord, let me see myself as you see me and give me grace and time to grow closer to you every day. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
