Attitude of Service

"On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. ‘Teacher’, he asked, ‘what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ ‘What is written in the Law?’ he replied. ‘How do you read it?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’, and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ‘You have answered correctly,’ Jesus replied. ‘Do this and you will live’."1

Many people in the world are in need today, and serving them is one of the most important callings of the Christian faith. Therefore, it is essential that believers commit themselves to helping others.

There are countless ways to serve others. For example, someone may decide to pray for a friend and be by their side until a difficult situation is resolved. Others might be available to answer a neighbor's questions about faith. If we look around with a prayerful attitude, we can see other opportunities, such as taking an elderly person to medical appointments, counseling a teenager who is going through a difficult time, or helping a single mother with her list of responsibilities.

Before you become overwhelmed by the diversity of needs in your area, remember that loving our neighbor should be a Church-wide effort. One person can't do it all. Instead, join a group of believers committed to serving those God puts in His circle of influence. Helping them takes time and sometimes resources, but when you do, the Lord will bless you with the joy and satisfaction that comes only from Him.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you for today's passage, because it instructs me on how I can serve others. I ask you to help me have an attitude of service at all times, starting with my family. Open my spiritual eyes so that I can see the needs around me and take action. Help me to use the resources you have given me to serve others, and may everything I do be for your honor and glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
