Am I enough?

"But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task? Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God."1

At one time or another, we have all felt inadequate. Maybe because we get angry with our spouse, because we fall behind at work, or because we are afraid to accept an opportunity to serve at church. In today's passage, Paul asks a question that points to this insecurity: "And who is equal to such a task? (2 Corinthians 2:16).

Although we are insufficient, God is not. When we trust Christ as our Lord and Savior, we become children of God and He grants us His righteousness (John 1:12, 2 Corinthians 5:21). He empowers us and has promised to always lead us in triumph in Christ Jesus (2 Corinthians 2:14). But unless we believe and obey Him in faith, we will not experience the life He has intended for us.

Feeling insufficient is not a sin, but using insufficiency as an excuse is. When God calls us to do something that seems beyond our capabilities, we have two choices: we can focus on Christ and move forward in triumph, or we can focus on ourselves and retreat in defeat.

In reality, it is a matter of faith. God will always give us the power to do what He asks of us. This does not mean that we will do everything perfectly, but every step of obedience is a victory that He will bless (Psalm 128:1-2).

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that in Jesus we are more than enough. Even when the feeling of inadequacy comes, your Holy Spirit lovingly reminds us that we don't have to do it alone, that you are with us to strengthen us and help us do what you ask of us. Thank you in Jesus' name, Amen.
