Faith Like a Mustard Seed

"Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment. Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, ‘Why couldn’t we drive it out?’ He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."1

In Matthew 17:20, the Lord Jesus says to His disciples, "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."

These words should serve as an encouragement to us all. Can you hear the power in them? Remember that a small seed of faith can unleash extraordinary possibilities. What matters is not the size of our faith, but the object of it, that is, the One who created the heavens and the earth and holds all things in His hands. In the presence of our Almighty God, no obstacle is too great.

When we face great adversity, we may be tempted to doubt and worry. But in those moments we can choose to trust in God's sovereignty. That helps us find biblical passages like Jeremiah 32:17 that says, "Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you”, and to rely on those truths. We can also ask the Lord to give us his grace and to grow our faith.

Keep in mind that God is always on our side, and that means we have no reason to fear (Psalm 118:6). Therefore, in times of uncertainty, let your faith, like a mustard seed, blossom into bold prayers and courageous actions.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank you that in today's passage you remind me that I just need to have faith like a mustard seed. You remind me that the important thing is who I'm putting my faith in. Thank you for reminding me that I have an Almighty God, Creator of the heavens and the earth. Thank you that You are sovereign and always in control, Help me to remember this truth every day of my life. I ask this in Jesus' name, Amen.
