Faithful in Prayer
Let
your fountain be blessed and rejoice in the wife of your youth.1
Relationships
are delicate things. They need to be nurtured and cared for in order to grow
strong and healthy. Relationships should not be based on feelings or random
choice; as Christians, those relationships should be the result of faithful
prayer. In the book of Genesis, Isaac and Rebekah taught us that love is a
decision. In a time when it was not uncommon for men to have multiple wives,
Isaac chose to spend his entire life with Rebekah as his only wife. Their relationship shows us that
when you decide to love a person and exchange vows before God, then we can rely
on HIM to keep our relationships grounded; loving each other to the end even
when difficulties arise in the marriage.
Prayer
was an essential part of their relationship. Even before Isaac and Rebekah met,
Isaac’s father, Abraham, prayed and was faithful in asking God for a good wife
for his son, not just a good woman, but one who would be the perfect wife for
Isaac (Gen. 24). Abraham’s example teaches us to pray for our children’s’
future spouses. God already has one picked out; pray and ask God to lead them
to each other! Once married, Rebekah realized that she was unable to bear
children. Isaac faithfully prayed for his wife and asked God to allow her to
conceive. God heard Isaac’s faithful prayer and blessed them with twin boys!
(Gen. 25:21) What a beautiful example of God’s grace toward us. It goes without
saying that we should be praying over our spouses every day. Lifting them up in
prayer is the most selfless way to show our love.
Relationships
are difficult when we try to figure them out on our own. Prayer is the best way
to take care of those most dear to us. Allow God to grow your relationship and
watch it flourish!
Suggested
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for my spouse and for creating them especially for
me. Thank you for allowing me to come to you in prayer and place our
relationship before you. Help us to be faithful to you and in turn be faithful
to each other. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
