Made Free in Christ

"Jesus said to the people who believed in him, ‘You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."1

When we have a genuine experience with Jesus, there arises in us a great longing to obey Him and to be faithful to Him. Jesus' saving touch doesn't leave us the same! The desire to immerse ourselves in his Word and to seek his presence in prayer is born in us. We allow Him to speak His will for our lives and show us what He wants to do in us.

It is in the midst of that search that He reveals more of His truth to our hearts. He shows us who we are in Him: His beloved children, redeemed for His glory. God reveals to us His power over sin. He gives us clarity about the salvation He has already achieved for us through His death on the cross and His resurrection, and He shows us how we should live now that we are His children.

Jesus gives us complete freedom! By receiving Him as Savior we cease to be slaves to sin. We become free to overcome temptation and to live life within God's purpose (John 8:34-36).

In Christ we have freedom, but we must decide whether we will live as free children who reflect His image or whether we will live as slaves to our old self. God gives us the strength to overcome temptation and reminds us that in Him we are more than conquerors. As we focus on God and living within His will, we diminish the desire to do what pleases us and increase the longing to please Him.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that not only do I live in a free country, but I am also free in Christ. From the moment I accepted You as my Lord and Savior, I went from being a slave to sin to having freedom in Christ. Sin no longer has power over me! Lord, let me be aware of that freedom at all times, so that I can make choices that honor and glorify You. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

1. John 8:31-32 (NLT).
