The Source of My Joy
“You have turned my mourning into joyful dancing. You have
taken away my clothes of mourning and clothed me with joy, that I might sing
praises to you and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give you thanks
forever!”1
Last week we talked about how the wickedness in this world
can be overwhelming at times. Even the most emotionally and spiritually healthy
people can find themselves feeling discouraged after watching the nightly news or seeing the numerous amber alerts that come to our cellular phones. It often
feels like the bad news outweighs the good! In addition to all that is happening
around us, we are each facing battles in our personal lives as well. It could
be health problems, financial stress, family drama, workplace stress… the list
can go on and on. If we are not careful, all these things can steal our joy!
I want to turn our attention to king David once again today.
He faced a variety of problems, had enemies, made mistakes, but time after time
we see him clinging to the hope he had in God. David was aware that God was in
control, and he could change the circumstances. David learned to trust
confidently instead of allowing the fear of the unknown consume him.
We can easily feel overwhelmed by our emotions, especially
when we find ourselves in trying situations. The darkness seems so thick, and
we struggle to see that “light at the end of the tunnel”. But when we surrender
everything to God, he can give us victory, even over the most hopeless
situations. He is the Source of our joy, and we can experience this joy in all circumstances
and sing praises because He holds our future.
Suggested prayer: Lord, today I choose to surrender my worries
and problems at your feet. Refresh my soul and restore Your joy within me. There
are many unknowns and there are times I have no control of what happens. But
You hold all things in your hands, and nothing will happen without you knowing.
I am forever thankful for your endless love and sing praises to You for You alone
are worthy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
