Aligning My Life with God's Will

"Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors."1

If you seek to obey Christ, you have probably heard the phrase "the will of God." It is often mentioned in the context that He has a plan for every believer, or that we should do what pleases Him, walk in His ways and the like. If we love the Lord, we want to obey Him (John 14:15). However, there are reasons why we might not understand His plan for our lives.

Interpreting God's Word correctly. When our days are filled with commitments and activities, it's easy to have trouble maintaining a consistent study of Scripture. If we don't spend time in God's Word, we tend to forget what matters to Him. Then, there are times when we will use the Bible incorrectly to support decisions we have already made or to do things our way. Being in God’s Word is how we can hear Him and sense His leading.

Choosing the wrong guide. When making decisions, we sometimes rely a lot on other people's opinions. We believe that the easiest and quickest way to get answers is to ask other Christians, or even unbelievers who seem "wise." Making the Bible our daily companion is the best way to never lose sight of God's plan. Be prepared to spend time reading and listening as the Holy Spirit teaches you what God's will is for your life.

Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I thank you that you left us clear and precise instructions through your Word to live a life according to your will. I ask for your help, so that, despite how busy my day to day may be, I will always find time to study your Word. May it become a necessity for my life to want to spend time in your presence. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.

1. Psalms 119:24 (NIV).
