Seeking Fulfillment
Jesus said to them, Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Sir, they said, always give us this bread. Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.1
God created us to be comfortable with ourselves. In spiritual terms, human beings are designed to experience peace, joy, and contentment. But many people go through life feeling fragmented and empty.
In John 4:7-30, Christ spoke to a Samaritan woman who clearly felt incomplete and disillusioned with the direction of her life. Seeking to fill her soul with human love, she had gone through many heartbreaking relationships, and at the time, she was in a sinful relationship. This woman had dipped her "bucket" over and over again into the well of human love, hoping to find acceptance that would fill her life, but each experience left her thirstier. In front of the Lord, she presented herself as a broken soul and a social outcast.
People throughout history have been drinking from false wells. The truth is that only a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ can make a person feel fulfilled. From Him comes the living water that quenches our thirst forever.
This means that the Savior meets all our needs in this life. In a world marked by sin, we will not have a perfect existence, but through Christ we can hope to live with a sense of deep and lasting satisfaction.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You designed us to experience joy, peace, and contentment. But because of the painful experiences in our lives, there may come a time when we feel broken and empty. Thank You that through Jesus, I can have a genuine and personal relationship with You and experience the fullness of life. Only You can heal and fill every void in our lives! In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
