Pressing Toward the Goal

“I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead! I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead.”1

Our goal as Christians should be to live a life that pleases the Lord, and to serve Him effectively. To move forward effectively, it is important to leave the weight of our past behind us. Hebrews 12:1-2 says, “…Let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” If we want to reach the goals that God has put in our hearts and effectively be His hands and feet on this earth, we must stop focusing on our past and start focusing on Jesus. Only then can we reach the potential that God sees in us.

We just began a new year, so we can start fresh! Some things will not change and that’s okay, but things like our habits, goals, priorities, perspective, and attitude are all things we can evaluate and modify as needed. What has God put on your heart to do this year? Our ministry is not necessarily inside the walls of a church, but rather in everyday conversations and interactions with others. We are ministering to others when we show kindness, respect, and humility. We are serving Christ when we help someone in need. Every moment is an opportunity to serve God. Our goal is to be more like Christ, and in doing this, lead others to Him, not only with our words, but with our actions.

With the weight of our past behind us, and our eyes focused on Jesus, let us gather the courage to do what God is calling us to do. No one knows how long we have on this earth, so let’s get to work and accomplish God’s will for our lives. Not sure what God is telling you to do? Pray, listen, and then obey. Not sure where to start practicing the fruits of the Spirit? Start in your own home, with your family. The important thing is that we start and then trust that God will give us the endurance to keep pressing toward the goal.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for new opportunities to start again. I may stumble and fall, but I choose to trust that you are not done with me yet. Your plans and goals for me are greater than I know. Please help me be like you, so that others will want to imitate me, and in doing so build a personal relationship with you. Allow me to listen to your leading and obey, and let me start this ministry at home. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
