What’s Your Problem?
“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?”1
Many of you may have heard, or heard of, David Ring. He is a nationally known evangelist, author, and motivational speaker. Over the years he has shared his story of triumph over disability and discouragement with thousands of people around the world. He was the youngest of eight children and was born with cerebral palsy. His father was a preacher who died of cancer when David was 11 years old. His mother also died of cancer four years later. David shares how this affected him and all he suffered on his own without his parents there. The criticism he received because of his disability was more than he could handle at times. He would lay in bed at night, crying, and hoping to die. After so many years in the church, he questioned God’s love for him because, if God loved him, then why would he take his parents? Why would so many bad things be happening to him? But one day God spoke to him and David accepted His love and the joy only God can give. From that day on, David went on to do amazing things that the doctors and many others thought was impossible. David always finished his life story singing “Victory in Jesus” because that is what summed up his life best.
I was in elementary school the first time I heard David Ring preaching, but his story had such a big impact on my life, that I have never forgotten the phrase he used. After sharing his story, his challenge was, “I have cerebral palsy. What’s your problem?” He encouraged us and motivated us to share God’s love with others. He challenged us to stop making excuses and allow God to use us.
Since Bible times, people have been making excuses as to why we can’t do what God is asking us to do, but imagine all that could happen if we trusted that we could do it! Stepping out in faith and obedience to God takes courage, but with God all things are possible.
Today, I want to encourage you to be willing to be used by God. God doesn’t seek perfection or your focus on your abilities, he seeks a heart that is willing and available to be used. Have the courage to be the person that God created you to be… flaws and all. Trust that His grace is sufficient for you. Choose to be part of God’s work here on earth. You are an important piece in the larger puzzle of God’s plan, and many are waiting to hear your story. You could be the story that leads others to believe in Christ today.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, today I choose to set all excuses aside and have the courage to obey you in faith. You can use anyone you want to; all you need is a willing heart. I place my fears, insecurities, and weaknesses at your feet, believing that your strength is perfect and trusting that I can do all things through You. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
