Nothing But the Truth
“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”1
For hundreds of years, countries around the world have used a solemn oath when taking a stand as a witness. The words sworn with a left hand on the Bible have become familiar to us all. A variation of “I (swear/promise) that the evidence I shall give will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God” can be heard in most courtrooms and legal presentations. However, there is a greater truth at stake in this oath. Although, many will no longer swear on the Bible or even use God’s name, the simple use of the word TRUTH holds a much greater significance.
In John chapter 14 we see Jesus preparing his disciples for the events that were about to happen; His death, followed by His resurrection, and finally His ascension. As Jesus tells them that He is going to prepare a place for them, He says: “You know the way to the place where I am going.” (v. 4). To this, they become troubled, and Thomas says, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (v.5) Jesus then answers with the well-known phrase: “I am the way and the TRUTH and the life...”. (v.6) Jesus is the TRUTH! When we speak truth, we also speak life; Jesus is also LIFE! So, when one is asked to tell the truth, we are being asked to follow Jesus’ WAY.
We are called, as Christians, to go into the world and share the gospel – Jesus – to every person. (Mat. 28:19-20) We are called to tell the Truth (Jesus), the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth. We are Jesus’ Witnesses and as such we take an oath to speak His Truth, which very simply put is to speak of Jesus Himself.
Are you ready to place your hand on God’s Word and be “sworn in” today as Jesus’ Witness? Will you promise to tell the TRUTH, the whole TRUTH, and nothing but the TRUTH?
Suggested Prayer:
Dear God, Telling the truth is something I learned as a child, but when I understand that telling YOUR TRUTH is what I’ve been called to do, I realize that I’ve fallen short. I want to be your witness today and share your love with those I encounter. I promise to tell the TRUTH, and in doing so, find the way, your WAY to eternal LIFE. Thank you for dying on the cross to make that WAY for me. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
