An Example of Wisdom: Abigail

“Haughtiness goes before destruction; humility precedes honor.”¹

Abigail is one of my favorite women in the Bible for many reasons. Although she was married to Nabal whose name literally meant “Fool”, she possessed all the admirable characteristics that her husband lacked. I am not sure if she had an arranged marriage, but she showed great patience and strength by staying with this man. You can find the full story in 1 Samuel 25, but in short Nabal had insulted King David, and more importantly insulted God. He was self-centered, rude, and failed to recognize the provision and blessing God had given him, including David protecting his land and flocks and treating his servants with kindness and respect. When David asked for the same kindness in return, Nabal questioned his character and harshly declined. Abigail is made aware of this interaction, and she acts with great wisdom and ultimately saves the lives of many, which would have otherwise been killed due to her husband’s foolishness.

Because of Abigail’s wisdom and humility, people looked to her for leadership (vv. 14,17). She showed generosity (v. 27) and was quick to ask forgiveness (v. 28). She spoke the truth with eloquence and knowledge of God (vv. 24-31). She looked not only for her own well-being but that of others (v. 31). She waited patiently for the right time to speak (v. 36-37).

Being married to such a man could have made Abigail bitter or she could have become just like her husband. We can see that he liked to party and drink, so who knows what her life must have been like! But she chose to model a godly character that was an example to all. Nabal’s haughtiness led to his destruction, but we also see how Abigail’s humility and wisdom brought her honor.

Regardless of our circumstances, let us choose to act wisely and humbly before God and others. Let us lead through our example and may everything we say and do bring glory to God.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, please forgive my foolishness. Create in me a character of wisdom and humility like Abigail. Help me always keep my eyes on you and seek your truth. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
