Joyful Boundaries
You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter.1
Commands. Law. Instruction. Rules. Boundaries. None of these words sound very joyful, do they? When I was a teenager, I remember hearing that a child is happiest when they have boundaries; that young people need rules to thrive. And I thought, “No way! I can’t wait to grow up and make my own rules and have the freedom to do as I please!” Yet, as I grew and matured, I found rules to be somewhat comforting; boundaries made me feel safe and yes, they even brought me joy!
The words I opened with are the Words that Scripture uses to describe God’s Word. John 15:10-11 says, If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. Psalm 19:8 (NLT) says, The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. Verse 7 (ESV) says, The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul. The Book of Proverbs is filled with wisdom and instruction so that we may live long, happy lives. In Psalm 119, David found joy and comfort in God’s Rules: I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous rules... My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times... When I think of your rules from of old, I take comfort, O Lord... At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your righteous rules.
There is only joy to be found in God’s Word which is filled with promises and blessings for our lives when we obey and follow His commands; His law; Live by His instruction and delight in His rules. These boundaries were set on and for our lives so that we might live fully and abundantly enjoying every season God has in store for us. Yes, even the seasons themselves were created as boundaries to bring us joy!
Suggested Prayer: Almighty God, Lord of all Creation, You are amazing! You thought of every little detail, including every Word that would bring joy to my life. Forgive my disobedience and my prideful spirit when I thought I knew what path was best for me. I know now that Your Words are Life. Thank you, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
1. Psalm 74:17 (ESV).
