Night Work
being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.1
Sometime in early September, a sign showed up on the side of the main road we travel on every day that read NIGHT WORK, followed by the dates this event would be happening. The dates were set for weeks later, but the city made sure to give us fair warning. Considering the time frame and season, this specific night work could only mean one thing: Christmas lights! And, although they have not begun to shine, as we drive through town we can see the lights that have been strung around the trees during the night when no one was watching, in preparation to dazzle us throughout the holiday season. I cannot deny that driving through our seasonally lit town is something I look forward to every year, because even though it is the time of year when we lose daylight earlier, the twinkling lights at dusk have a way of filling me with an unspeakable joy on my drive home.
Sometimes when we are seeking God’s will for our lives, we may come across spiritual night work signs in the form of patience-inducing trials or strength-producing circumstances that warn us that God is at work. Although we cannot always see when the work is being done in our lives, we suddenly see hints of the work that God is doing, in the night, when no one is watching. You may wake up one morning and feel joyful, or go through your day filled with peace. Suddenly, one day you will be driving down the normally dark road that you have been traveling on and realize that, while you were sleeping, the seasonal work in your life has been completed and your way has been prepared with twinkling lights showing off the Master’s handiwork.
Seasonal changes can sometimes be bothersome and interrupt the commute of our daily tasks, but it signals that something beautiful is coming. In our lives, the NIGHT WORK will come to an end leaving us shining bright announcing God’s Glory for all to see and know.
Suggested prayer: Lord, I know you are still working on me and, even though the night work seems long and never-ending, your Masterplan has yet to be revealed. Fill me with joy and peace as you continue your work in me. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.
