Prince of Peace
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.1
The rush of the holiday season is here. There are plans to make, gifts to buy and parties to attend. These activities can leave us exhausted! Instead of experiencing peace and joy, we may feel overwhelmed because there is so much to do or because sad memories are awakened.
How can Christ be our Prince of Peace when we feel anything but peace?
To understand why the Lord was given this title, we must first understand what it means. He did not come to end all conflicts, at least not yet. One day he will return to the world and rule as King in an atmosphere of external harmony. However, He said that in this present life we would have problems (John 16:33).
When Christ came into the world, His goal was to bring us peace by reconciling us to the Heavenly Father. His death on the cross paid our debt of sin and our relationship with God was restored. Now the Lord offers us divine peace: an inner serenity that fills our hearts and minds, no matter what is happening around us.
Is your life characterized by the serenity that keeps your thoughts and emotions? Try to set aside time each day to fix your eyes on Jesus and let Him heal your heart and calm your spirit.
Suggested Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, I want to thank you for the peace we can experience when we are in Christ Jesus, our Prince of Peace. Despite the holidays and the rush of the season, we can come to You and experience that inner peace that only You can give us. Beloved Father, help me be a reflection of Your love and Your peace for other people. I pray in Jesus' name, Amen.
