“But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. How strange a body would be if it had only one part! Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you.’ The head can’t say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you,’ In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.”1
I am sure you have heard of how Sir Michael Costa was conducting a rehearsal in which the orchestra was joined by a great chorus. About halfway through the session, with trumpets blaring, drums rolling, and violins singing their beautiful melody, the piccolo player muttered to himself, “What good am I doing? I might as well not be playing. Nobody can hear me anyway.” So, he kept the instrument to his mouth, but made no sound. Within moments, the conductor cried, “Stop! Stop! Where’s the piccolo?” The silent instrument was noticed and missed by the ear of the most important person of all.
Although this is a familiar story, it continues being true for us today. At times we may feel like what we have to offer is not important. We may think that others possess greater abilities and talents than we do. However, God has placed us just where he wants us in his “orchestra”. Each of our roles is important and the performance will not be complete without us.
Our world needs Jesus more than ever. The devil is out to steal, kill, and destroy.2 However, God has given us each special talents and gifts to communicate His message of Salvation and hope in a way that no one else can. At times when we feel insignificant and are tempted to stop “playing” our part, let us remember that God can do great things through anything and anyone, all we need is a willing heart. Each of us has something important to offer in God’s plan and service.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gifts you have given me and for where you have placed me. Allow me to never underestimate the part I play in your “orchestra”. I pray that you would take all I have and use it to reach others for your glory. In a world full of fear and uncertainty, I ask that you use me to reflect your peace and love. Thank you for loving me just as I am. In Jesus’ name, amen.
