Are We There Yet?

“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

If you have ever traveled any amount of distance with a child, then you have heard the ever-repeated phrase “Are we there yet!?” A child’s mind cannot yet fathom distance or destination and so all car rides seem to take an extra-long time causing them to become impatient. Not knowing what awaits them might seem like a trial that they are being forced to endure; however, the wait becomes even more excruciating when they actually understand that the destination is somewhere exciting that they’ve been longing for!

As Christians, we too, are traveling toward an exciting destination " our Heavenly Home! The Apostle Paul understood this well and he described our travels on life’s road as a “light momentary affliction” that is preparing us for a “glory beyond all comparison”! There will be moments on our earthly journey where we become impatient, and circumstances might seem too difficult to bear. Our frustrations might lead us to ask, “Lord, Are we there yet!?” Paul challenges us to remember that these things are ‘transient’ and they will pass. We can lift our eyes to the road ahead and sing, “This world is not my home, I'm just a passin’ through”! Our destination is Eternal and although we cannot see what awaits us, we have been promised Glory beyond compare!

Suggested prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, traveling along life’s highways can make me feel tired and anxious. Thank you for reminding me that this is ‘momentary’ and that you are preparing me for an ‘eternal weight of glory’. I look forward to that day when I will no longer ask ‘Are we there yet?’ because I will have arrived at my eternal destination with you! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
