“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”1
Fear is a common enemy that at some point or another has threatened us all. As children, we feared the dark. As youth, peer pressure and loneliness allowed fear to creep in. As young adults, fear of the future and its unknown weighed heavy upon us. As adults, we may have experienced fear of failure. Fear has assailed even the best of us.
David set a great example for us in the 56th Psalm. He was quite literally running for his life, yet he found time to pray and meditate on God’s words. David had been running from the Philistines after having defeated Goliath. The Philistines were a wicked people and David had much to fear. From his hiding place he pleaded with God to be “merciful unto him” while pointing out to God how numerous his enemies were (v.2). David feared for his life! Yet, in his fear, David recognized God’s greatness as he prayed: “When I am afraid, I will trust in you.” David knew that God was in control, and although his circumstance was making him feel uncertain about his future, He knew, without a doubt, that if he put his trust in God, then He would see him through this dark and lonely time.
When we find ourselves fearing our circumstances, take a moment to reach out to God and rest secure in His Holy Hiding Place. Trust that God is bigger than any storm and greater than any giant that might present itself in our path. Place your fears in God’s mighty hands and He will give you the courage to face those fears and come out victorious! Time and again, God’s Word says: “Do not be afraid, I am with you”, so cling to that promise today. When you feel fear creeping in, don’t be afraid! Trust in God " He is with you.
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. - 1 John 4:18
Suggested Prayer:
Dear Mighty God, I don’t want to be trapped by my fears, so I give them to you and trust you to take control of even the smallest situation that might make me feel afraid. Today I cling to the promise that you are with me " I will not be afraid! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
