“Then the Lord
God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life; and man became a living being.”1
“The Spirit of
God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”2
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit us last
year, the media alerted us with all the symptoms surrounding the virus (fever,
cough, loss of taste and smell, shortness of breath, etc.). We saw images on
the news of many in the hospital hooked up to oxygen and ventilators. We heard
personal testimony from friends and family of their own symptoms. The lack of
oxygen seemed to be the most debilitating symptom. Breathing, which comes
naturally, became very difficult for some, and suddenly we realized how
something so natural is easily taken for granted.
Breathing, however, is much more than
just the oxygen flowing in and out of our lungs. The Bible says that when God
formed man from the dust of the earth, he breathed life into him. It was God’s
own breath that gave him life!
A popular worship song exclaims the
words: “It’s YOUR breath in our lungs, so we pour out our praise to YOU
only...”. God breathed life into us so that we would in turn praise Him! We
were created to praise our Creator, not just to inhale and exhale, but that with
each breath, we would sing out praises to our God and Savior. King David
praised God by singing out to Him that His “loving kindness” was even better
than life itself! (Ps. 63:3)
After Jesus’ resurrection, he appeared
to his disciples and filled them with the Holy Spirit by breathing on them.
(John 20:22) Do we take time to praise God with every breath? Do we spend time
with Jesus, drawing so close to Him that we can feel Him breathing the Holy
Spirit into our lives? God’s breath is life " take a deep breath and let Him
fill you today!
Suggested Prayer:
Dear Almighty God, I am here on this
earth with breath in my lungs for the sole purpose of praising you. You are all
loving and kind. You sent your Son to die a cruel death to grant me the
forgiveness of my sins so that I might have the privilege of spending eternity
in your presence. Thank you for your breath that gives life to these dry bones.
My heart cries out your greatness. In Jesus’ most Holy name, Amen.
