Home for Christmas

“Lord, through all the generations you have been our home!”1

There is something about the Christmas season that makes us want to be home. Whether it’s the warmth shared among family and friends, participating in meaningful traditions with our loved ones, or simply knowing you have a safe place where you are known and loved. For many people, there really is no place like home. However, for those who may have hurtful memories of their childhood or broken relationships with their parents or siblings, “home” may hold a different meaning. Going home may not be feasible due to circumstances out of our control. Perhaps we have made decisions that have caused a separation between us and those who love us, and we are struggling to come back.

Regardless of what our earthly home looks like, or who we share them with, Christmas is a great time to remember our true home. The sweet baby Jesus that was born in a stable was God’s invitation to us into His home. Jesus came to bring peace, hope, and restore what had been broken. He makes no exception of persons and offers his love unconditionally. The good news is that we don’t even have to find our way home, because Immanual came to us! All we have to do is open our hearts and accept the invitation to let Him be our home. You will remain unfulfilled, restless, and homesick until God becomes your dwelling place.

Once you find your home in Christ, He will give you the strength and wisdom to mend broken relationships, forgive where needed, and receive forgiveness as well. He will give you a hope and a future. The miracles I have seen God do in broken families are too numerous to list! It all starts when we come to Him.

This season, let us find joy in the fact that the Lord has faithfully been our home through all generations. We may go astray, but His invitation is new every day. No matter who we are or what we’ve done, Jesus is waiting with outstretched arms to welcome us in. Come home to Christ today!

Suggested prayer: Dear Lord, our earthly families and homes are such a special gift you have given us, but it does not compare to the home I have in you. Thank you for being my home in all circumstances and seasons. I may lose my way at times but help me come back home to you today. Thank you for Jesus, in whom I am accepted, loved, forgiven, and welcomed into your family. I love you, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
