“’I am the
Lord’s servant’, Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled…’”1
While little
is known about the details of the personal history of Mary, we do know that she
was from the tribe of Judah and the lineage of David (Psalm 132:11). Even more
important than her history, perhaps, is the fact that she was chosen by God to
be the mother of our Savior, Jesus. Though perplexed by the initial announcement,
Mary submitted to God’s will and sang, “My soul glorifies the Lord, and my
spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:46-47). Her pregnancy had the
potential of stirring up many questions, not only from Joseph, but from all
those around her, yet she chose to trust God with her life and was used to
bring Jesus into this world.
In addition
to the unknowns of the pregnancy itself, she also had to face the pain of
seeing her Son suffer when the time came for him to be crucified. Being a mother
myself, I can only imagine the love and pain she felt as she saw Him fulfilling
the purpose for which He had been sent to earth. The lyrics of the song, “Mary
Did You Know” come to mind as I wonder if she really knew the greatness of the
baby she was rocking in her arms. The song says:
“Did you
know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod, and when you kiss your
little baby, you’ve kissed the face of God?... Did you know that your baby boy
was Heaven’s perfect Lamb, and the sleeping Child you’re holding is the Great I
AM?”
What an
amazing and extraordinary privilege and responsibility she was given in being
Jesus’ mom here on earth. Being completely human, God saw fit to use her
because of her devotion and obedience to Him.
Each day is
filled with unknowns in our personal lives. We experience a myriad of emotions
as we receive both the blessings and trials given to us. Like Mary, may we have
the humility and grace to praise God amidst the unknowns and submit to His plan
and purpose for us.
Dear God,
thank you for sending your Son to earth to be our Savior. Thank you also for
the example of faithfulness and obedience we have in Mary. Help me submit to
your will and trust that your plans are perfect, even when I don’t know all the
details. Thank you for the great things you can do through ordinary people,
like me, when we are willing and available. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
Luke 1:38 (NIV).
