Many years ago, a man hired an experienced guide to lead him on a hike into the Swiss Alps. After many hours, they came to a high and remote mountain pass. To the man’s dismay, he saw the path had almost been washed out. What could he do? To the left was a sheer rock cliff, to his right, a precipice that dropped nearly 1000 ft. Looking down, he felt his head growing faint and his knees beginning to buckle. At that moment his guides shouted, "Do not look down or you are a dead man, keep your eyes on me, and where I put my feet, put yours there as well."

The man did as he was instructed and soon, he passed from danger to safety.²

Tomorrow a new year begins, and this is good advice for all of us. No one knows what lies ahead. The only thing we know is what is happening at this moment. We all have plans and dreams, but the times and seasons of life are in God’s hands. Sooner or later, we will come to a dangerous pass where the way ahead seems to be washed out. At that moment we can panic and fall into terrible trouble, or we can fix our eyes on the Lord Jesus and carefully follow his steps before us. If we follow him, we can be sure we will be safe regardless of the fear and uncertainty.

I encourage you, friend, to leave the weight of the past behind and cling to the hope of newness in Christ. God is always faithful. Trust him and let him be your guide in everything you do.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, as this new year begins, I pray that you help me leave the past behind me. I don’t want to carry the pain, bitterness, and anger I may have. Instead, I choose to leave them at your feet, and follow your footsteps to the fulfilling future ahead of me. Even in times of uncertainty, help me cling tight to your hand and trust your will. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
