Seasons Change

“The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.

“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;
I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.

 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

So, Abram went, as the Lord had told him...”1

Every year as the seasons change, we may take a day, or weekend, to do some spring cleaning. “Out with the old, in with the new” becomes our mind set. We focus on decluttering or rearranging, and it can be refreshing to change things up a bit. But what happens when we have to change things up a lot? It can be exhausting and sometimes we prefer to “not go there”.

Old Testament celebrities Abram and Sarai, were settled in their hometown, surrounded by friends and family, comfortable in their culture and traditions, when God said it was time for a change. This was meant to be a good change with the promise of blessings in the end but being uprooted from everything they knew was sure to be a difficult change. You see, God told Abram to pack up his belongings and head out on a road trip without giving him a destination. Where this might have sounded like an adventure for Abram and his wife, I’m quite sure that they had their doubts. The fear of change and “what if’s” probably flooded their mind. But the couple chose to trust God to guide their way. They considered the blessings associated with this great change and traveled into the unknown holding on to the promise that their name would be great; that God would give them descendants as many as the stars; and the world would be blessed because of their faith. Oh, and God also changed their names to Abraham and Sarah!

This faithful couple embraced their season of change and were blessed more than they could ever imagine. They trusted God without question and allowed the change to make them strong and fearless of the future. They changed things up a lot, and it was exhausting. But the world is better for it " we are blessed because of their change!

Suggested Prayer:

Dear Lord, thank you for leading Abraham and Sarah to make that change so many years ago. Thank you for preparing their heart to follow your guidance. Thank you for that powerful example. Change can be hard, but I am so thankful that I can rely on you to guide me to make the right choices. Show me where I need to rearrange and declutter my life so that I, too, might be a blessing to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
