Changed Into His Image

“So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord â€" who is the Spirit â€" makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.”1

The word “changed” in the verse above is actually the verb form of the Greek word “metamorphosis”. This is the term we use to describe the transformation that turns a simple caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly, and this is the change that our salvation produces in us. And while we may not always be fond of change, this is something we all need.

From the moment of our salvation, the Holy Spirit works within us to change our sinful nature to the nature of Christ. This is not a superficial change that changes our outward appearance, but rather a change that goes much deeper, changing our hearts and minds. Each of us may struggle with different sins, and some may take longer to overcome (such as pride, gossip, jealously, anger, etc.). Whatever the problem may be, one thing is clear: All of us need to be changed, and this change will come as we surrender and submit to God’s authority in our lives. God has saved us from sin and eternal separation from Him through his Son, Jesus, so that we could ultimately be changed to be more and more like Him.

The image of Christ that this change produces in us will be reflected in our attitudes, desires, and actions. The more we become like Christ, the more evident the fruits of the Spirit, as mentioned in Galatians 5:22-23, will be in our lives.

The salvation that God has given us is an incomparable gift that we must not take for granted. God’s plan for us, and work in us, begins at the moment of Salvation, but is a continuous journey as we come to know and model the character of Christ by spending time with Him. There are also times that God will allow temptations and trials in our lives to play a part in our transformation process, and even then, despite how difficult, may we choose to submit and surrender to God’s perfect will. Let our biggest desire be to be changed into the glorious image of Christ and accept the metamorphosis that God wants for us.

Suggested prayer: Dear God, thank you for the gift of salvation through Jesus. I ask that you make me moldable and teachable so that you can transform me to be more like you. Let this be my heart’s desire. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
