Blessed are the Meek

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”1

The Greek word translated “blessed” in Matthew 5, can also be translated “happy”. It is not necessarily referring to an earthly happiness, but rather spiritual happiness and prosperity. Ultimately, our spiritual health matters much more to God than our temporary comfort here on earth, but in His goodness, he also allows us to have enjoyment. I am reminded of the words of Psalm 37:11 which say, “But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.” Both verses mention the blessing and promise that comes to the meek, but what does it mean to be meek?

The Greek word translated “meek” is praus and generally means humble, gentle, or mild. In 1 Peter 3:4, “meek “is partnered with “quiet spirit”. In short, being meek is to be humble before God and towards others. In Ephesians 4:1-2, Paul urged us to be meek when he said, “I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, with all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.” Jesus Christ left us a perfect example of meekness that we see in Philippians 2:6-8. After taking a moment to read these verses, you will see that meekness is having the right or power to do or be something but refraining from it for the benefit of others. Jesus had every right to do whatever he wanted, but he submitted to the Father and died on the cross for us.

As Christians we are called to possess this meekness when sharing the gospel as well. 1 Peter 3:15 tells us to “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness (meekness) and respect.” Having this attitude and perspective will allow us to connect with others and more effectively share the gospel with them. Being prideful and arrogant will only push others away and is the opposite of the character God wants to produce in us.

As we seek to be more like Christ, we will grow in meekness and experience the abundant blessing of God in our lives.

Suggested prayer: Heavenly Father, in today’s society, being meek goes against the mindset of power and popularity that many seek. Keep me from falling into the trap of always seeking my own benefit. Instead, give me the mind of Christ, who was the ultimate example of love and meekness. Give me a quiet spirit and humility as I seek to do your will and share your gospel. May others want to know you more by seeing Jesus in me. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.

  1. Matthew 5:5 (NIV).
