Blessed are the Peacemakers

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”1

Since the moment sin entered this world, there has been a need for Peacemakers. Brothers at odds, families divided, nations at war; this has been going on from the beginning of time. We have been longing for “world peace” for ages, and yet we just can’t seem to get there.

Peacemaking is not about keeping the peace; it requires us to step in the middle of the conflict and bring peace to the situation. It’s not just about playing nice and showing kindness; it requires us to act in uncomfortable circumstances. But how about when we are the ones in the conflict? Being a Peacemaker allows us to be quick to repent when we have wronged others, and quick to forgive when others have wronged you.

Today, peacemaking is not convenient. We prefer to avoid the situation rather than be caught up in it. We choose indirect actions, rather that direct approaches. Social media has become a popular fortress for those who prefer to hide behind confrontational walls. We laugh and make light of serious topics and become brave when others laugh with us. Christians and non-Christians alike, have chosen to turn a blind eye to the truth instead of standing for what is right. But Jesus has been calling us to make peace for many generations. He said that His children are the Peacemakers. The title “Christian” quite literally means, “belonging to Christ”. If we claim to be a Child of God, a Christian, then we are to seek peace " step up and make peace happen. Jesus didn’t say it would be easy, however, we are still called to pursue it.

“World Peace” depends on us; it isn’t just going to happen. Paul said, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” (Romans 12:18) Let’s begin by making sure we’re at peace with those we come in contact with every day… our family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. Then, be willing to take peaceful actions when situations arise. Only then, will we be called Children of God!

Suggested Prayer:

Dear God, I admit that I have shied away from confrontation instead of making peace. It has been so much easier to turn a blind eye to conflict. But, Lord, I want to be called your child. I ask that you give me courage to take a stand when opportunities arise that call for a Peacemaker. Don’t allow me to sit by passively, instead give me the strength to take action. In Jesus’ Holy name, Amen.
