“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God,
and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.”1
Solomon was still a young man when he became King of Israel after his
father David. He followed in the footsteps of his father by serving the One
True God. Solomon showed his love for the Lord
by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David... (1
Kings 3:3). In turn, God chose to grant King Solomon one thing; whatever he
wanted! Solomon could have asked for wealth, health, or happiness, but instead
he asked for wisdom. God was so moved by his request that he also granted him
wealth and honor " to be the greatest king of his time! (1 Kings 3:13) God also
told Solomon that if continued to walk in obedience to Him, he would also give
him long life. Solomon couldn’t have imagined that his humble request would
have granted him a lifetime of blessings. James said, “If you need wisdom, (and
who doesn’t!) ask God for it, and he will give it to you.” Solomon needed
wisdom to rule a country in a God honoring way.
Though our need for discernment might not be so daunting, we definitely
need wisdom to lead our home; most of the time we need wisdom just to open our
mouths to speak! God is more than generous, and gracious enough, to grant us
wisdom whenever we ask for it. Wisdom is one thing we can never have too much
of, so ask away!
Suggested Prayer:
Dear Lord, thank you for your mercy toward us. We require a dose of
wisdom every day and all we have to do is ask you for it. So today, I ask that
you give me a discerning heart to live as you would want me to. Give me wisdom
to guide others to you, starting in my own home. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
James 1:5 (NLT).
