“After this, Jesus traveled about from
one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.
The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits
and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out…
These women were helping to support them out of their own means.”1
While we don’t know much about Mary Magdalene’s
life before she met Jesus, the day she met him changed her life forever. She had
been tormented by seven demons when Jesus healed her. From the moment she was
healed, she never took it for granted and became one of the most faithful followers
of Jesus. While most of Jesus’ disciples hid after His arrest, Mary Magdalene
was one of the ones who stood near the cross while Jesus died, went to the tomb
to anoint his body, was among the first at the tomb at the resurrection of
Jesus, and delivered the message of the resurrection to the disciples.
Being possessed by demons typically
brought rejection, isolation, and hopelessness to the person affected. Therefore,
Mary had most likely suffered greatly before being healed. But Jesus’ compassion
is not hindered by our past, His grace does not depend on our worthiness, and
His forgiveness is not anything we have earned. Jesus gave men and women alike
the opportunity to share in the great ministry of spreading His Good News, and
this is what Mary did.
Just like Mary, God has given us
freedom from bondage through Jesus. We have the opportunity to walk away from
our past and be transformed into a disciple of Jesus. This transformation in
our lives should produce such a profound sense of gratitude in us that serving
God faithfully comes as a result. God wants to use us, not because of our
abilities, but because of his mercy and grace. All he needs is a heart that is
available and ready.
Suggested prayer: Dear God, we all
have a past and need your healing. Please search me and bring to light any area
that I have not surrendered to you. I ask that you free me from any sin and
transform me into Your faithful follower. I am ready and available to be used
by You and share Your message with others. Thank you for hearing and answering
my prayer. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Luke 8:1-3 (NIV).
